Complex sentence
Complex sentence แปลว่าสังกรประโยค หรือ ประโยคที่มีเนื้อหาซ้อน หมายถึงประโยคใหญ่ที่สุดที่ประกอบขึ้นมาจากประโยคเล็ก 2ประโยค ซึ่งใน2ประโยคนี้มีความสำคัญไม่เท่ากันนั่นคือประโยคหนึ่งเรียกว่า main clause หรือ principal (ประโยคหลัง)ส่วนอีกประโยคหนึ่งเรียกว่า subordinate clause (ประโยคอาศัย) เป็นประโยคที่ต้องอาศัยประโยค main clause เสียก่อนแล้วจึงได้เนื้อหาสมบูรณ์ ซึ่งก็แน่ละหากแยกกันอ่านที่ละประโยค ประโยค main clause จะอ่านได้เนื้อความสมบูรณ์ในตัวของมันเอง ส่วนประโยค subordinate clause จะอ่านไม่ได้ความหมายเลย
ตัวอย่าง
-This is the house that jack bought last year.
นี้คือบ้านขอแจ๊คได้ซื้อเอาไว้เมื่อปีที่แล้ว
ข้อความนี้แยกออกได้เป็น2ประโยคคือ this is the house เป็นประโยค main clause ส่วน that jack bought last year เป็น subordinate clause จะเห็นได้ว่าเมื่อประโยคเล็ก2ประโยคมารวมอยู่ด้วยกัน จึงทำให้ประโยคที่กล่าวมานี้กลายเป็น Complex sentence ขึ้นมาทันที โดยใช้คำ main clause กับ subordinate conjunction เป็นตัวเชื่อมระหว่างประโยค คือ
1.ใช้คำเชื่อมหรือคำเชื่อมแฝง (subordinate conjunction) ได้แก่
If as if since because that
Whether lest as before after
White till until though although
Unless so that than provided in order that
Provided that notwithstanding that etc เช่น
-He is unhappy because he is very poor.
เขาไม่มีความสุข เพราะเขายากจนมาก
-She said that she would come back soon.
หล่อนพูดว่า หล่อนจะกลับมาเร็วๆนี้
-Danai works as if he were a manchine.
ดนัยทำงานราวกับว่าเขาเป็นเครื่องจักร
-Wait here until I come back.
รออยู่ที่นี้จนกว่าผมจะกลับมา
2.ใช้ประพันธ์สรรพนาม (relative pronoun) เป็นคำเชื่อมได้ ได้แก่คำต่อไปนี้คือ
Who whom whose which that
As but what of which where

เขาเป็นผู้ชายคนแรกที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้
-She made the same mistakes as her sister did.
หล่อนได้ทำผิดอย่างเดียวกันกับที่น้องสาวของเธอทำ
-The man who came here this morning is my uncle.
ผู้ชายที่มาที่นี่เมื่อเช้านี้เป็นลุงของผม
-There was no one but admired him
ไม่มีผู้ใดที่จะไม่ยกย่องเขา
-The tree of which the leaves are yellow is dying
ต้นไม่ที่มีใบเหลือง (แสดงว่า) กำลังจะตาย
(ประโยคข้างบนนี้ถือว่าเป็น complex sentence เพราะมี who but of which ไปเชื่อม)
3.ใช้สัมพันธ์วิเศษ (relative adverd) เป็นคำเชื่อมได้ แก่คำต่อไปนี้คือ:-

- I don know when she arrives here.
ผลไม่ทราบว่า เมื่อไหร่หล่อนจะมาถึงที่นี้
-He will go wherever she lives.
เขาจะไปที่ไหนก็ได้ที่หล่อนอยู่
-Do you know how she did it
คุณทราบไหมว่าหล่อนทำได้อย่างไร
-I don understand why you have done that.
ผมไม่เข้าใจว่า ทำไมคุณจึงได้ทำอย่างนั้น
